Position Overview

Advance CTE: State Leaders Connecting Learning to Work is seeking a Communications Associate to help implement a communications strategy that promotes the organization’s mission, vision and work.  The ideal candidate will have communications experience, have a passion for working in a mission-driven non-profit organization, and be a team player committed to getting results in a fast-paced environment. This position provides a unique opportunity to support states in their communications and advocacy efforts, create communications materials across a multitude of platforms, and support the organization’s effort to make the case for Career Technical Education (CTE) to a variety of audiences to help ensure each learner has access to high-quality CTE and preparation for the careers of their choice.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Communications Associate will:


Directly support and implement Advance CTE’s communications strategy:

  • Inform and implement a strategic communications plan that will support and enhance the full range of Advance CTE/The Center to Advance CTE projects, initiatives and organizational goals.
  • Develop marketing materials including digital announcements and promotional toolkits for events, publications and tools targeted towards a variety of audiences.
  • Compile, lay out and distribute Advance CTE’s monthly membership email newsletter and other broadcast emails as needed.
  • Draft news releases, articles, publications, talking points, fact sheets and other content to build awareness of and promote the work of Advance CTE and the importance of CTE.
  • Maintain the organization’s brand and style guidelines.
  • Copy edit briefs, reports, tools and other resources and communications.
  • Manage membership outreach lists including e-newsletter subscription services.


Website Support:

  • Serve as primary online content producer and editor, with responsibility for ensuring that the Advance CTE website meets high standards of editorial quality, accuracy, relevance, readability, user experience, and search engine optimization.
  • Develop and oversee a schedule for website updates and routine maintenance, support updates to the website in alignment with the goals of the communications strategy, including overseeing content management, site navigation, search engine optimization, etc. and coordinate with other staff members who are responsible for project- or event-related content.
  • Support the implementation of a blog strategy including authoring content and coordinating with other staff members and external partners who contribute content.


Provide strategic communications support to key initiatives:

  • Serve as the communications liaison for a multi-year, multi-partner pathways initiative, including maintaining a website, supporting the development of graphics and resources that bring visibility to this initiative and the work of participating sites
  • Serve as the communications liaison for the Postsecondary State Career Technical Education Leaders Fellowship at Advance CTE - Sponsored by ECMC Foundation, elevating the Fellows and resources developed through the initiative.


  • Develop an ongoing understanding of CTE and the role of Advance CTE/The Center to Advance CTE in serving the CTE community.
  • Occasionally travel, staying within established spending guidelines, and be requested to work flexible hours in response to member and media requests; as well as attend conferences and Board meetings in the early morning hours or late evenings.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications/Skills:

  • Advance CTE values both education and work experiences that demonstrate the ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this position and estimates that a minimum of two to four years of related experience is necessary to carry out the duties of this position.   • Direct experience supporting an organization’s releases and announcements to ensure they reach their intended audiences
  • Website management experience (WordPress preferred)
  • Competency with design software (e.g., Canva, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.).
  • Excellent English language oral and written communication skills, proficiency in spelling, punctuation, citations, grammar and content, including public speaking with a style appropriate to the audience and direct experience writing and/or editing blogs, newsletters and social media posts.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to think critically, use good problem-solving judgment, and take complex ideas and present them in a style for a layperson’s understanding.
  • Ability to work independently, accurately and meet deadlines and simultaneously manage multiple projects/tasks.
  • Excellent collaboration skills, particularly in soliciting and incorporating critique and feedback from multiple stakeholders. The candidate must work collaboratively with others, in groups large and small, as well as independently.
  • Knowledge of and competency in equity, and racial equity in particular, with openness to increase content knowledge and skills in this area to support the organization’s ongoing work in this space
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with a wide variety of people, including but not limited to, staff, government officials, State Directors, key stakeholders, community partners, media
  • Knowledgeable of standard office equipment and computer software programs, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.


Preferred Qualifications/Skills:

  • Knowledge of/experience in the field of education or workforce development.
  • Experience working with a nonprofit, membership organization, and/or with states.
  • Video editing and/or graphic design experience


Supervision Received:        The Communications Associate works under the direction of the Communications Manager


Supervision Exercised:       None


Compensation: Salary range for this position is $50,000-65,000; exact salary depends on experience and new staff rarely start at the top of the range. Benefits include but are not limited to: a casual work environment and no-cost health care for the employee; phased in benefits include a $155 per month transportation subsidy, 9% contribution to 401(k) plan (no match required), the week off between Christmas and New Year and paid parental and family medical leave.


Location: Advance CTE’s office is located in the Washington, D.C. metro area (Silver Spring, MD). The preference is for the Communications Associate to work out of the Advance CTE office as an in-office position with a flexible telework policy; however, for highly qualified candidates, we will consider a fully remote position filled by an employee located outside of the Washington, D.C. metro area.  Advance CTE does not have a legal or organizational presence in the following states/territories: Alaska, California, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, any of the U.S. territories and therefore is not open to accepting applications from individuals who reside in any of these locations and are not willing to relocate.


Travel Required: Up to 20% of the employee’s time may be spent on non-local travel to carry out the duties of the position.
